Before joining Riel Law Firm in 2006, Mr. Derrico had years of experience at a large, international law firm, working in the Los Angeles office of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP. His practice focuses on litigation, licensing, and intellectual property litigation. Mr. Derrico has experience in both civil and criminal litigation. On the civil side, Mr. Derrico has worked for Fortune 500 companies in cases both large and small, and has handled complex litigation and class actions, along with contract disputes and environmental cases. Mr. Derrico also has experience in criminal practice, and has worked on First and Fourth Amendment defense, state regulation of price overcharges, and federal regulations affecting the adult entertainment industry.
While in law school at the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall), Mr. Derrico served on the Boalt Hall Student Association and as Editor-in-Chief of Boalt Hall's law school newspaper, the Cross-Examiner. Mr. Derrico has also written two novels, Right Ascension and Declination.
Litigation
Mr. Derrico has experience in various aspects of litigation,
on both the plaintiff's side and on the defense side. While
at Pillsbury Winthrop, Mr. Derrico assisted in all phases
of litigation, from drafting complaints and answers through
discovery and motion-writing and through resolution of the
case. Mr. Derrico has assisted in high-profile, multi-million-dollar
litigation for large companies, and has also represented individuals
on smaller-scale disputes. As such, Mr. Derrico has had experience in both leading and assisting roles, and has conducted depositions, mediations, and arbitrations.
Some examples of Mr. Derrico's practice areas include numerous
environmental tort cases, including the recent defense of
a corporation against hundreds of individual actions alleging
cancer and other injuries due to contamination of soil and
groundwater with various toxic substances; representation
of a corporation seeking damages resulting from the fallout
of the 2000-2001 California energy crisis; and, on the criminal
side, Mr. Derrico has represented companies in the adult entertainment
industry regarding the complex interplay between the freedom
of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment and restrictive
government regulations and record-keeping requirements associated
with the production and distribution of adult content.
Intellectual Property
Mr. Derrico has also relied upon his vast writing experience (legal, journalistic, and literary) in drafting and preparing patents. Mr. Derrico has drafted patents for his own inventions, and has also teamed with Ms. Riel during the patent drafting process with an eye toward future licensing and litigation issues.
