Jennifer J. Riel’s practice includes intellectual
property and litigation. Representative matters involve patent,
copyright and trademark infringement, patent licensing, real
estate disputes and construction defects. Although Jennifer’s
practice encompasses a wide range of practice areas, Jennifer
specializes in preparing and prosecuting patent applications
and counseling clients with respect to protecting their intellectual
property rights.
Jennifer is a registered attorney to practice before the United
States Patent and Trademark Office and was formerly an associate
of Pillsbury Winthrop LLP and of Van Etten Suzumoto and Beckett
LLP.
Intellectual Property
Jennifer’s experience includes practicing intellectual
property law with an emphasis on patent prosecution and patent
litigation. Her patent law practice encompasses a wide variety
of technologies including mechanical apparatuses, chemicals,
pharmaceuticals, medical devices and casino gaming inventions.
Jennifer’s intellectual property experience also includes
drafting briefs regarding patent infringement for the U.S.
Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Jennifer has also
been involved in enforcing and prosecuting trademark infringement
matters for a major entertainment production company involved
in television programming for broadcast networks, cable networks,
distributors and advertisers.
Jennifer has worked directly with inventors in preparing and
prosecuting domestic and foreign patent applications in the
biological, mechanical, chemical, and pharmaceutical arts.
Most recently, she has worked on a variety of casino gaming
inventions in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jennifer has rendered infringement,
patentability, validity and commercial value opinions and
counseled clients regarding a variety of technologies including
telecommunication systems, biotechnology, medical and surgical
devices, fluid and valve systems and casino gaming systems.
Jennifer also has experience in analyzing patents for product
clearance assessments and has prepared freedom to operate
opinions.
Jennifer’s experience also includes drafting and analyzing
contracts including licenses, assignments, product purchase
agreements and covenants not to sue relating to patents, trademarks
and copyrights. She has also performed due diligence of issued
and pending patents, copyright and trademark registrations.
Litigation
Jennifer has experience in various aspects of litigation.
In addition to making court appearances, she has drafted a
variety of pleadings for state and federal court, drafted
mediation briefs and participated in mediations and settlement
negotiations. Jennifer has also drafted and negotiated contracts
including leases and settlement agreements involving real
estate matters, construction defect issues and general business
disputes.
Property Tax
Jennifer also has experience in property tax matters. She
recently conducted negotiations to eliminate liability on
behalf of a pro bono client and prevented the foreclosure
of her client’s home. Jennifer was able to identify
and reverse an improper reassessment of her client’s
home which caused a substantial increase in tax liability
and recurring penalties for the past fifteen years. Because
of her work on this property tax matter, Jennifer was a recipient
of the Wiley W. Manuel Award for Pro Bono Legal Services presented
on behalf of the California State Bar.
